I made the mistake of telling a friend that making a crocheted caterpillar scarf for her 7 year old would be no problem. WRONG
First I was not able to locate a pattern that both I and the 7 year old liked. Finally I resorted to doing a rough sketch of what I hoped he would like. Luckily with only a few changes (like hairy eyes, and feet) he agreed it would be perfect.
Then came the problem of yarn. NO that color green was all wrong, how come there wasn't any blue in the scarf, I wanted more purple. Well you get the idea. So a shopping trip to the local yarn store with a 7 year old who would rather have been playing soccer ensued. After several hours he finally settled on the first yarn we looked at. A variegated yarn of muted greens and blues with a hint of purple, and of course a green eyelash yarn for the eyes and feet.
After a few starts and stops I finally got the bugs worked out of the pattern running around in my head and finished the scarf. He loved it. He loved it so much he was out the door to show it off to his friends before I could get a picture of him wearing it. (note to self, next time take pictures of the finished product before handing it to a hyper 7 year old).
His mother has informed me that he spreads it out on his pillow at night and sleeps on it cause its soft.
I can hardly wait until the next time I'm challenged to create something for this child. Although I do have that pattern for a flying dragon just laying around gathering dust....
